Biggest NT Park Expansion in 25 Years

A bold new chapter is unfolding for the treasured Litchfield National Park. In one of the largest and most significant expansions in 25 years, the Northern Territory Government has announced the acquisition of Silkwood, a 30,000-hectare property, which will increase the size of the park by 20 per cent.

The $7.5 million expansion is expected to boost tourist attractions, drive economic growth for the Northern Territory and benefit local businesses, all just 120km from Darwin (90 minutes’ drive).

So what’s coming?

New recreational opportunities will open up for camping and swimming with hidden gorges, hot springs and 4WD tracks, which will attract the adventure seeker in us all. NT tourism operators will see this as a golden opportunity to expand offerings in a landscape rich with natural beauty and cultural heritage.

The 2025 Silkwood acquisition for Litchfield National Park is set to benefit not only the ecosystem but also create new opportunities and growth for the Territory’s local tourism sector and hospitality operators.

Silkwood: A Perfect Fit for Tourism

Formerly known as Mt Bundy Station, Silkwood borders Litchfield’s south-east boundary near the regional town of Adelaide River. This pristine parcel of land is rich with natural wonders, including waterfalls, hot springs, woodlands and wetlands.

This addition opens up new ground for eco-tourism, with future public access expected to include camping, swimming and 4WD adventures. The property also contains untouched waterfalls, rare flora and fauna, and a landscape that is vital to biodiversity.

According to Marie-Clare Boothby, the Minister for Parks and Wildlife, there’s also potential for a new dedicated hunting reserve to be introduced for outdoor enthusiasts, adding even more to the offerings at Litchfield.

Robin Falls: Adding to Litchfield National Park’s Allure

Nestled just off Dorat Road near Adelaide River, Robin Falls is already a cult favourite. This enchanting, three-tiered cascade—dropping around 20 to 25 metres—emerges after a gentle yet rocky one-kilometre return hike through lush Top End bushland.

Families and adventurers alike pitch their tents beside the creek at the free campground, breaking off to plunge into the cool waters at the falls.

Whether it’s the joy of a day hike or the delight of waking up to birdsong by the water’s edge, nature enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that this beloved spot will benefit from better protection and improved infrastructure. This includes new viewing platforms and trail access, offering elevated views of hectares of escarpments and natural formations.

Best of all? Community use of the area will remain open and respected, while still enhancing conservation goals. Having secured the current use of the property of Silkwood, this move will represent the largest addition to Litchfield in a generation.

We at Norther can’t wait to plan our next Litchy escape and check it out!

Offering More Space and Protecting Litchy’s Biodiversity

Finalised in late 2024, the announcement in 2025 offers more space for those wanting to avoid the crowds at the world-renowned Wangi Falls, Buley Rockhole and other popular sites, while also breathing new life into nearby towns such as Adelaide River. Environmental protection advocates have welcomed the move, because with increased land comes the opportunity to better protect nature, support local wildlife and honour the First Nations traditional owners.

A map change is expected to reflect the new park boundaries, enhancing the NT’s tourism materials and signage.

Visitor Access

While no specific date for public visitor access has been set, planning and consultation are already underway with Traditional Owners to ensure sustainable development and proper infrastructure.

The NT Government has emphasised that the park expansion aligns with Australia’s ‘30 by 30’ commitment: protecting 30% of land and sea by 2030. The Litchfield expansion signals not only growth for Litchfield National Park, but a broader commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship in the Territory. This aligns with long-term environmental goals and supports initiatives led by parks and wildlife and planning and environment agencies.

Litchfield National Park’s expansion marks an exciting new chapter for one of the Top End’s most loved destinations. With fresh tracks, new swimming spots, and untouched landscapes on the horizon, there’s plenty to look forward to.
