Florence Falls Litchfield: Walks, Swimming & Tours Guide

Why Visit

Florence Falls, Litchfield National Park

Florence Falls is one of the most iconic spots in Litchfield National Park, and for good reason. The twin waterfalls cascade into a deep, crystal-clear plunge pool, surrounded by lush monsoon forest. It’s a striking contrast to the dry sandstone escarpment above, giving you two completely different landscapes in one location.

It’s also one of the most visited attractions in the park, drawing over 240,000 visitors each year. Despite its popularity, it still feels like a true Top End experience, especially if you arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

Whether you’re here for a quick swim, a short walk, or a full day exploring nearby sites, Florence Falls is an easy and rewarding stop that delivers every time.

Florence Falls Walks & Access

Getting to Florence Falls is straightforward with well-maintained paths and clearly marked tracks suitable for most visitors. It is one of the first sites you encounter when entering the park from Batchelor, and is the easiest and most visitor-friendly experience in the park. A sealed access road leads directly to a well-equipped car park with toilets, picnic areas, and clear signage, making it suitable for most vehicles, including 2WDs.

From the car park, a short, flat path takes you to the main lookout — this section is the most accessible part of the site and is suitable for a wide range of visitors, including those wanting a quick stop without a long walk.

Swimming

Swimming & Safety at Florence Falls

Best Season: May – September (Dry Season)

Florence Falls is one of the best places to swim in Litchfield. The plunge pool is generally clear, cool, and open for swimming during most of the dry season.

Crocodile-free when open and signed safe

Florence Falls is only open for swimming after crocodile management and safety checks have been completed by NT Parks.

Swim in designated areas only

Stay within the marked swimming zones and follow all safety signage.

Glass is not permitted near the water

Help protect visitors and the environment by avoiding glass around the swimming area.

Always follow posted safety signs

Conditions can change quickly. Check current park alerts and obey all warning signs before entering.

The best time for swimming is during the dry season (May to September), when conditions are stable, and access is reliable. Early in the dry season, the waterfall is still flowing strongly from the wet season rains, making it an ideal time to visit.
